If a predetermined route is about 20 to 30 percent longer than another possible way, people will use the shortcut. This is one of the conclusions of the research work by Professor Dirk Helbing and his group, which was also covered by German newspaper Weser Kurier in August. The "law" of shortcuts is reliable also in the situations when the path is only ten meters long, Professor Helbing says.
