Apologies

Regarding a slide from a lecture on February 21, 2022.

by Marcin Korecki

I am very sorry that a slide, which I recently showed in my lecture on February 21, 2022, has apparently offended or angered people and was perceived as being derogatory towards a particular race or ethnicity. This was never my intention
and could have been clear in the context of the discussion in my lecture.
The particular slide was meant to identify different groups to which software/algorithms are or could be applied and to generate discussion whether such use is appropriate or not. None of the points nor the discussion was in any way linking the various groups, and no reference was meant to refer to any race or ethnicity.
I now realize and have learned that the presentation of bullet points as shown on the slide in its original form and the immediacy to the picture shown could be
interpreted as offensive, and that the material should have been racially more sensitive. To avoid any further misunderstanding, I adapted the slide, so it can no longer give rise to false impressions (see attachment below). Once again, my apologies for any offence caused, which was wholly unintended by my lecture. I promise that I will make my utmost effort to avoid similar incidences in the future.
I also welcome students to have an open conversation about their concerns and will engage in seeking good solutions.
